St. Augustine PRIDE 2004 Reviews
Live and Tell Each Other How it Feels!

The kickoff event of Pride weekend, the Block Party, was dedicated to
the memory of Elizabeth Papapetrou. In addition to her musical talents,
Elizabeth demonstrated unwavering dedication to raising consciousness about
and advocating for the rights of the LGBT community.
St. Augustine PRIDE 2004 was a success! We had MANY more
people participating this year - some just found the community!
Rainbow
Flag March - We had 125+ people (3 times the number
of participants last year) march across the Bridge of Lions with rainbow
flags and we draped a huge flag in the center. The event was covered
by all of the major news stations with Rev. Ruth and Jason taking turns
with interviews. Our own Marvel, Eddie, and Sean made the front page
of the St. Augustine Record
Block Party -
Hundreds and hundreds of
folks packed Cuna Street
for a night of great music,
dancing, and wonderful
food! A couple of the news
stations broadcast live
from the party!
Pride Picnic -
We had 150+ at the
picnic - and not a drop of rain until we were
packed up! We had dozens of folks brand new to
the land, and they loved it!
Pride Service - We draped the
huge rainbow flag across the stage at the Limelight
and Rev. Ruth preached a wonderful sermon on
how far we've come and dreaming about how far
we can go!
Queer
Theatre - We ended the 3 day celebration
with an absolutely wonderful performance by
Jade Estaban Estrada - ICONS: Gay & Lesbian
History. Jade wrote and performed the entire
play, changing into 7 different characters
throughout history. The information and details
were amazing! We truly ended on a high note!
'Live
and Tell' Rocks St. Augustine!
An article by Natasha Khairullah-Out In The City
Hundreds
of people came out to enjoy good company, good food, and good entertainment
at St. Augustine’s three-day
wandering Live and Tell event
on June 18th 19th and 20th. If you weren't’t there, you definitely missed
one of the greatest events of the year.
Live and Tell, a benefit event for St. Augustine
pride and in memorium to the late Great Elizabeth
Ann Papapetrou, also known
as Motherheart, raised over $2,000 in ticket sales, food and beverage donations
as well as tarot readings.
The Festivities kicked off with a rainbow flag march over the Bridge of Lions
in downtown St. Augustine.
Dozens of supporters came out, flags in hand, and joined the march over the
bridge down to the south end and back. In the Middle, a large flag given to FirstCoast
MCC was unfurled and flew proudly. On the bridge, loads of car horns
honked at marchers in support of the flags.
After the march,
partakers headed over to the block party on Cuna Street in front of crucial
coffee café where the street was closed
off. Performers In the Mood, Flash
Silvermoon, Crystal Bretz, Amy
Carol Webb, Katherine Archer and theatre group Byte Nite,
took the stage that night. Stage two, set up in front of Crucial Coffee also
housed performers simultaneously.
“This is Fabulous, such a peaceful atmosphere, I’m lovin’ it!
I’m from Michigan, and you never see block parties, let alone events
like this in Michigan” said Lucy Valentine of Glen Compass, Michigan
who attended the block party with some friends from Jacksonville. Valentine
also marched over the Bridge of Lions with both her seven year old daughter
and husband.
For those hungry for some flat art, Works by Artist Chris Beckman were
displayed for auction. Other groups, such as Triangle JAX and Seven Brothers
Productions set up tables on Cuna Street for the event as well.
Day two at Live and Tell brought
St. Augustine Pride’s
seventh annual
all-day picnic and entertainment on the grounds of First Coast Metropolitan
Community Church. There was plenty of food, music and fun in the sun to go
around. Serene weather made for a perfect picnic atmosphere. Approximately
150 people attended the picnic.
“It was a nice time. I’m glad to see so many people out showing
support and enjoying the beautiful weather,” said Jason Relph, a Member
of the Board and organizer for Pride 2004.
Day Three rounded up Live and Tell with an evening
of LGBT-themed
Theater at the Limelight Theater. Byte Night opened the evening
with some satirical Sketch comedy and dramatic monologues written by local
playwright April Hutchinson. Skits featured performance from some of Jacksonville's
most well regarded actors and actresses as well as new talent.
Next, performer based out of New York City Jade Esteban
Estrada invited the audience
on an exhilarating journey into the one-man musical, ICONS:
THE LESBIAN AND GAY HISTORY OF THE WORLD,
VOL. 1., a guided tour through historical Gay and lesbian touletts.
“St. Augustine is great. I’m so glad I was able to come out and
do the show, I had an amazing time”, said Jade after his performance.

"WHAT a PARTY! Even the couple of dozen "protesters" couldn't
dampen the pride we felt looking at the flags on our bridge, marching
down the sidewalk, posing for a HUGE photo in front of the fort, listening
to great music, dancing in the street, eating yummy food, buying T-shirts
or rainbow stickers, or catching up with old friends!"

Old news but good news:
6/7/05
WE WON!!!
After the St. Augustine Pride Committee’s request to fly flags on
the Bridge of Lions was turned down for the third year in a row (despite
their efforts of attaching “historical significance” to the
permit request), Equality
Florida and the National
Center for Lesbian Rights stepped in and filed a suit on behalf of
the Pride Committee against the City. They won the suit and the rainbow
flags will fly on the bridge and bay front until June 13th, at which time
they will be taken down and replace with American flags for Flag Day on
June 14th!
